| Derby Duck Race |
|
Duck Derby is an event that Second Harvest of South Georgia holds each spring to raise money for our programs, including the Valdosta Food Bank, the Product Recovery Program, Kids Cafe, and the Manna Truck Program. Each year at Wild Adventures Theme Park, we release 10,000 rubber ducks in the Paradise River. Each derby duck races towards the finish line with a winning number attached to it. The first 10 “adopted” ducks to cross the finish line are cross-referenced on a master list to their lucky “parents.” The winners are awarded prizes that are donated from local community partners which range from a 3-year lease on a vehicle to gourmet ice cream for a year. Everyone is invited to “Adopt-A-Duck” through the mail, online, or at various adoption sites set up in and around the Valdosta area. Participants do not have to be present to win, but if anyone would like to attend, all you need is your adoption certificate for entry to Wild Adventures for the race. Prices for Duck Adoptions range from $5 for a single duck to $400 for 100 ducks – the more you purchase, the better your chances are of winning! Also, the most important part of adopting is the benefits those in need receive: • Adopting 1 duck will feed a child a hot meal each night at Kids Cafe for 1 week. • Adopting 2 ducks will provide a 55-pound bag of food for a family of 4. • Adopting 5 ducks will ensure that a senior citizen has a hot meal for lunch for 1 week. • Adopting 10 ducks will buy milk for 100 children in Kids Cafe for 1 week. This fundraiser is in its 5th year and is recognized throughout our community. So, beginning this winter, look for the big yellow “Derby Duck” and advertisements in the newspapers. Adopting a duck is a great gift and a great way to give back to your neighbors in need. |
